20 Home Remedies For Burns
Burns can perhaps be the worst form of injury one can undergo. It can happen at a place on fire or in your kitchen. Home Remedies for Burns:
There is no remedies for the third degree burns besides taking medical treatment. The following are the homemade natural remedies which helps to cure the first degree and second degree burns.
1 Cold Water
Cold water will be helpful in treating the burns and also to stop the spread of burns to other parts.
Process:
- Pour running cold water over the burning area for few minutes (10 – 15 minutes) will gives you relief from the burns.
- You can also apply cold compress over the affected area and repeat the compress for several times a day to relieve from pain.
- But don’t use ice instead of cold water as it can resist blood flow and thereby causing damage to your delicate tissues.
- Use cold whole milk in the place of cold water and do the same process to get rid of the burns.
2 Raw Potatoes
Raw potatoes have anti irritating and soothing properties with which they can be used to treat the minor skin burns. It helps to reduce the pain and also decreases the chance of forming blisters.
Process:
- Take a raw potato and cut it into slice and rub this slice on the burn and around it also.
- While rubbing, make sure that it is not over rubbed with pressure and also see the juice is releasing from the potato all over the area or not.
- Using this remedy immediately after the burn occurs will give best results.
- Repeat the rubbing process if you feel necessary
3 Honey
It can be effectively used to disinfect the wounds and also in healing the burns. It acts as a soothing agent too. Honey, when applied to burns will draw fluids out of the tissues and cleans the burned area.
Process:
- Take honey and spread it on the burnt area directly
- Leave it like that without disturbing it
- Or you can take honey and spread it on the gauze bandage
- Put it directly on the burns
- Leave it like that for few hours
- Make sure to change the bandage 3 – 4 times a day.
- Repeat it regularly to get faster healing from the burns.
4 Black Tea Bags
Black tea contains tannic acid which helps to draw heat out of the burns and thereby reduces the pain caused by burns.
Remedy – 1:
Process:
- Take three tea bags and put them in a cup of cool water
- Allow it to sit for few minutes
- Dab the tea bags gently on the burnt area
- Or you can also put cold, wet tea bags directly on the affected area and cover them with gauze piece to hold them in that place.
Remedy – 2:
Process:
- Take 3 – 4 tea bags and make concoction by adding 2 cups of fresh mint leaves and 4 cups of boiling water and stir it well
- Strain the liquid into the jar and allow it to cool for few minutes
- Then dab the liquid on the burned area/skin with a cotton ball or wash cloth.
5 Aloe Vera
It is one of the oldest remedy used to treat burns. It contains the properties of painkilling, astringent, tissue – healing, soothing, which helps to cure the burns quickly.
Process:
- First of all, rinse the affected area with cold water or vinegar
- Then tale a small piece of aloe vera leaf from the plant and squeeze the fresh gel from it
- Apply this on the affected part of burn directly
- Leave it like that as it gives relief from its cooling effect and heals the burns soon.
- If you don’t have aloe vera plant nearby you then you can buy a cream which has aloe vera as ingredient from the medical stores and apply it on burns.
- Repeating this process will makes the healing process faster.
6 Onion Juice
Onions contain sulphur and quercetin which helps to give relief from the pain and heals the burns. It will also reduce the chances of forming blisters.
Process:
- Take an onion and cut it into small piece
- Apply the onion juice on the burns directly by rubbing it gently
- Make sure that you have to use freshly cut onions as after few minutes, onions may lose their medical properties.
- Process has to be repeated several times a day to get relief from the pain and burns.
7 Vinegar
Vinegar contains astringent and antiseptic properties which helps in treating the minor burns and prevents the infection.
Process:
- Take vinegar (any kind) and dilute it with equal amount of water.
- Now use this diluted solution to rinse your burned area
- Take a cloth or cotton which is soaked in the diluted vinegar and cover the area with it
- Replace the cloth / cotton with a fresh one once in every 3 hours.
- Doing this process continuously will results in lowering the pain and also to cure the burnt area.
8 Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil has antiseptic and painkilling properties, so it helps in curing the burns and also reduces the risk of scarring.
Process:
- Take few drops of lavender oil and apply directly on the burns for several times a day
- Or you can also pour lavender oil on a piece of gauze or clean cloth and put that on the burned area
- Gauze has to be replaced with a new one for every 2 – 3 hours.
9 Milk
The fat content which is present in the milk will helps to soothe the burns and also helps to speed up the healing process. Or if you take non fat milk, it contains special enzymes which helps to fast up the healing process by reduce the pain. So it’s good to take any kind of the milk.
Process:
- Take milk in a bowl and soak the burned area in the milk for about 15 minutes
- Or you can simply apply a wash cloth which is soaked in milk on the burnt skin
- Leave it for few minutes and continue the process for every 3 – 4 hours to get relief from the pain and to heal the wound
- But make sure to wash your hands or burned area, cloth after 24 hours of time with soap and water to get rid of the sourness.
10 Plantain Leaves
Plantain leaves are rich in anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti hemorrhagic and expectorant properties which helps to heal the burns without scars.
Process:
- Take few fresh plantain leaves and crush them to take the extract of juice.
- Then rub the juice directly on the burn
- Or you can also pound the leaf with small object and then wrap the leaf around the affected area of burns. As pounding of leaves will helps to increase the release of juice from the leaves.
11 Salt Solution
Salt helps to treat the burns by drawing all the liquid and makes it dry to get faster relief from the pain and burning. It will heal the burns in your mouth also, as eating food which is hot will causes mouth burn.
Process:
- Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in about 8 ounces of warm water
- Rinse the burnt area with this salt water solution for at least once in two hours.
- Doing this process will helps to relieve the pain and heals the wound faster.
12 Yogurt
Yogurt is a natural healer. It acts as an antidote for the burns. It also soothes the burned area and makes it cool to get relief from the pain.
Process:
- Take a cup of yogurt and apply it directly on the burnt area
- Leave it for about 15 – 20 minutes
- Gently wash the affected part to get relief from the pain and at last from burnt skin.
- Plain yogurt is more recommended than flavored one.
- Process has to be repeated to get relief from the pain.
13 Banana Peel
Lutein, a powerful anti oxidant which present in banana peel will helps to reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by the burning and also helps to heal the burnt area by reducing the pain caused by it.
Process:
- Put a banana peel on the burned area and rub it gently
- Leave it like that until it becomes black in color.
- Repeat the process to get relief from the pain and to heal it faster.
14 Ice Cubes
People either children or adults who eat their food hot like soups, hot chocolates or any other thing before getting cool will causes tongue burn.
Process:
- Ice cube is effective in treating the tongue burn. So take an ice cube and suck it in your mouth
- Be sure to rinse the cube in water and then suck it, so that it doesn’t stick to your tongue or lips and also over cooling will be reduced and makes you suck without any problem.
15 Soy Sauce
Soy sauce when applied will ease pain and makes your skin not to form blisters. It is effectively used to cure first and second burns.
Process:
- Take soy sauce and apply it gently on the burned areas
- Leave it for about 30 minutes
- Wash it off after completely half an hour.
16 Vitamin E Oil
Taking Vitamin E helps to heal the burns by reducing the pain. You can either take the food which has vitamin E or oil, Capsule that has vitamin E.
Process:
- Take vitamin E oil and apply directly on the burns
- Let it be like that without disturbing it.
- Sure you experience the healing by repeating the process continuously.
17 Mustard
Mustard will also help to heal the burns. Despite of stinging, it helps to take away the pain and reduces the blisters and thereby scarring.
Process:
- Take mustard and rub it on the burned skin but be careful that not to over rub it.
- Or it should be applied like hot dog style and leave it for few minutes
- Wash it off with cool water after completing an hour.
18 Turmeric and Mustard Oil
Turmeric is an antibiotic and helps to heal the burns. Mustard oil when applied will give relief from the pain.
Process:
- Take 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 tablespoon of mustard oil
- Mix it well and apply it on the burn
- Leave it for 30 minutes and rinse it off with normal water
- Process has to be repeated twice a day to get relief from the pain and to heal the burns.
19 Oatmeal
Minor burns while healing, they cause itching and you have to respond correctly or else it can lead to another problem. Oatmeal will help to relieve itching.
Process:
- Take 1 cup of uncooked oatmeal and add this into a bath tub of lukewarm water
- Soak for about 15 to 20 minutes
- Air will dry it so that the thin coating of oatmeal remains on your skin.
- Leave it for few minutes
- Be aware while getting in and out of the bath tub as oatmeal make the surfaces slippery.
- Or you can also apply body lotion to prevent the itching.
20 Diet Plan
Planning your diet will helps to heal the burns and strengthen your immune system to make the healing process faster.
- Vitamin C helps to heal the burns and other wounds speedily. So eat the food which has vitamin C like citrus fruits, potatoes, broccoli etc.
- Vitamin A and Vitamin E will also helps to speed up the healing process so, take the food which is rich in vitamin A and E such as green fruits and vegetables, cereals and nuts etc.
- Drink plenty of water and take all other healthy fluids to get hydrated yourself and also to strengthen your immune system to fight against any problem.
- Eat the food which has high in proteins, calories, vitamins, minerals, zinc which helps to speed up the healing process.
Tips to Cure the Burns:
Other than home remedies, you have to follow these tips to speed up the healing process and to cure burns without damaging it.
- In home, kitchen is the place of getting burns rather than any other rooms. So, be careful while you are working in the kitchen and wear apron while cooking.
- Lower the temperature of heater below 120 degrees F while heating the water as it second degree burn will happen quickly in water hotter than 120 degrees.
- Try to keep a fire extinguisher and a box of baking soda nearby you.
- Cover all your electrical outlets with some special covers o avoid the dangers.
- Apply white toothpaste over your wound or burned area and leave it for overnight. It will dries out the inflammation and helps to heal quickly.
- Use Calendula based ointments, gels or creams which helps to heal the burns quickly as it contains anti inflammatory, antiseptic and also gentle astringent properties which helps to heal the burns quickly.
- Avoid touching your skin where it is burned directly with your finger tips as this will increases the pain and also allow the bacterial spread to it. If you have a second degree or third degree burns then don’t pop the blisters or pick up the peeling skin around the wounds or burned area. This action will leads to another problem.
- Don’t apply ice directly on the burned area as it will cause more damage to your burnt skin because of variations in the temperature. So, always apply cool water or use a towel to apply the ice on the burned area.
- Don’t remove the clothes from the burned area if it is stuck to burn as it leads to bleeding but remove the jewelry and unburned clothing.
- Wash your hands before and after touching and treating the burns or if possible wear gloves.
- Burns which are second degree, third degree or from any radioactive material should not be treated at home, Consult the doctor immediately for medical treatment.
- Quit smoking, as it will slow down the healing process why because it reduces the blood supply and delays tissue repairs.
- Apply sunscreen lotion and other body lotions on the burned area as it cures the burns by spreading like a layer over the burned area and avoid the pollution, dust, sun effect on it.
- Apply baking soda paste (baking powder mixed with water) or egg white on the burned skin will helps to get relief from the pain and helps for a faster healing.
- Dressing it regularly will help to heal the wounds quickly and also helps to keep away from infections.
