10 Home Remedies To Help You (Or Your Spouse!) Stop Snoring

Snoring is a very common problem, and nearly 90 million women and men are affected in the United States. This annoying sound can not only interrupt your sleep but the sleep of your partner.

When the relaxed structures in the throat vibrate and start making noise is how snoring happens. Most of the time it is considered as a sleep disorder and heavy snoring can have serious social and medical consequences.

So, if you are snoring, you need to start looking for a way to fight the problem. Remember that with snoring your nights simply cannot be as peaceful and restful and everyone needs their rest.

There are many products available to treat snoring, but most of them haven’t been proven effective. There’s no miracle cure for snoring, but certain lifestyle changes and easy home remedies can be a big help in controlling it.

Here are the top 10 home remedies for snoring.

1. Clarified Butter

Ghee, also known as clarified butter, has certain medicinal properties that can help open up blocked nasal passages. This in turn will help you sleep better and snore less.

  1. In a microwave slightly warm a small amount of clarified butter.
  2. With a dropper put 2 – 3 drops of lukewarm clarified butter in each nostril.
  3. Do this every day before going to sleep and again as soon as you wake up the next morning.

2. Olive Oil

Being a strong anti – inflammatory agent, olive oil reduces the swelling to provide a clear passage for air and eases the tissues all along the respiratory passages. It can also reduce soreness. Use this remedy regularly to lessen the vibrations in the throat and stop snoring.how to stop snoring

  • Take 2 or 3 sips of olive oil before going to sleep
  • Combine one – half teaspoon each of olive oil and honey. Consume it daily before going to bed.

3. Turmeric

Being a powerful antibiotic and antiseptic agent, turmeric can help reduce heavy snoring and treat inflammation. Turmeric should be used with milk to treat snoring. The following drink will boost your immune system and also help you breathe freely while you sleep.

    1. In a glass of warm milk add 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder.
    2. 30 minutes before going to sleep drink it.
    3. Repeat it

4. Steam

One of the main causes for snoring is nasal congestion. One of the best solutions for reducing congestion is to inhale steam.

    1. In a large bowl pour hot boiling water.
    2. Add 3 or 4 drops of tea tree essential oil or eucalyptus essential oil.
    3. While holding a towel over your head, inhale the steam deeply through your nose for 10 minutes.
    4. Conduct this remedy every day before going to bed until your congestion clears.

5. Peppermint

 The anti – inflammatory property in peppermint helps reduce swelling of the membranes in the lining of the nostrils and throat, thus promoting smooth and easy breathing. Peppermint remedies work well for temporary snoring due to dry or cold air, or allergy.

  • Add 1 or 2 drops of peppermint oil to a glass of water. Gargle with it before going to sleep. Make sure you don’t swallow this solution. Do this daily until you get the desired result.
  • Add a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil to a humidifier about 30 minutes before you go to bed and turn it on, if congestion and dry air are causing your snoring. Let it run overnight. This will help open up your airways so you don’t snore.
  • You can also rub a little peppermint oil into the lower portions of each side of your nose before going to sleep.

6. Cardamom

Cardamom is an decongestant and expectorant, making it effective for opening up blocked nasal passages. You will snore less with free air passages.

  1. In a glass of warm water add ½ teaspoon of cardamom powder.
  2. Drink it 30 minutes before going to sleep.
  3. Do this every day to gradually reduce your snoring.

7. Nettle

It maybe due to some kind of seasonal allergy causing the nasal passages to get inflamed, if you only snore at a particular time of the year. This type of temporary snoring can be treated with nettle that has antihistamine as well as anti – inflammatory properties.

  1. In one cup of boiling water add 1 tablespoon of dried nettle leaves.
  2. Leave it for 5 minutes, and then strain it.
  3. Just before bedtime drink the warm tea.

Drinking 2 to 3 cups of nettle leaf tea every day during the allergy season can prevent snoring.

8. Garlic

Garlic helps reduce the inflammation in the respiratory system as well as mucus build – up in the nasal passages. So, if you snore due to sinus blockage, garlic can give you relief.

  • Chew on 1 to 2 raw garlic cloves and then immediately drink a glass of water. Do this every day, preferably before going to bed to enjoy sound sleep and reduce snoring.
  • Also eat your food while it is hot and use garlic while cooking your dinner.

9. Honey

Another option for snorers is honey. Honey can reduce the swelling around the throat area that can obstruct airways, due to its anti – inflammatory properties. Plus, honey lubricates the throat, which prevents the snoring vibrations from occurring.

  • In a glass of warm water, mix one tablespoon of honey and drink it before bedtime. Do it every day.
  • Alternatively, you can use honey to sweeten herbal tea that you like to drink after your dinner.

10. Chamomile

Chamomile can help stop snoring due to its well – known anti – inflammatory effects. It is also a muscle and nerve relaxant that can help you sleep better and ease tense nerves and muscles around the throat.

  1. In a cup of water add one tablespoon of chamomile flowers (or one chamomile tea bag).
  2. Boil it for about 15 minutes.
  3. After it’s boiled, strain it and add one teaspoon of honey.
  4. Drink the warm tea before going to sleep.

 

Some additional tips that can help stop snoring include:

  • Cut down or quit on smoking as it can irritate the lining of the nasal cavity and throat, causing ultimately snoring and swelling.
  • Raise the head of your bed by about four inches or use extra pillows to prevent the tissues in your throat from falling into your air passages.
  • Try singing before going to bed. Singing helps improve muscle control of the soft palate and upper throat.
  • If you’re overweight, lose weight. People who are overweight have extra tissues in the throat that contribute to snoring.
  • Sleep on your side rather than your back. When you sleep on your back, your tongue and soft palate rest against the back of your throat, blocking the airway and resulting in snoring.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages at least two hours before bedtime. Alcohol can depress your central nervous system, causing snoring.
  • To help you breathe easily as you sleep use nasal strips.

You’ll be able to eliminate or reduce snoring and get a good night’s sleep, by incorporating these preventive measures along with any of the remedies above.
